Mad King Ludwig of Neuschwanstein Castle
Ludwig II (Ludwig Friedrich Wilhelm; sometimes rendered as Louis II in English) (August 25, 1845 – June 13, 1886) was king of Bavaria from 1864 until shortly before his death. He is sometimes referred to as the Swan King in English and der Märchenkönig (the Fairy tale King) in German.
Ludwig is sometimes referred to as Mad King Ludwig, though the accuracy of that label has been disputed. Because Ludwig was deposed on grounds of mental illness without any medical examination, and died a day later under mysterious circumstances, questions about the medical “diagnosis” remain controversial.
Ludwig is best known as an eccentric whose legacy is intertwined with the history of art and architecture, as he commissioned the construction of several extravagant fantasy castles (the most famous being Neuschwanstein) and was a devoted patron of the composer Richard Wagner.
Neuschwanstein Castle Description & History:
Neuschwanstein Castle was built by King Ludwig II, also known as Mad King Ludwig. o replicate medieval architecture and to pay homage to the operas of Wagner. You may think you’ve already seen it–it’s Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, but real. The foundation stone was set on September 5th, 1869. When Ludwig II died in 1886, the castle was still not complete. The building site near Pöllat Gorge is probably one of the most beautiful in the world.
Welcome to the world of Miniature Gemstone Castle Clocks! Mad Ludwig would have approved of these enchanting masterpieces which were inspired after Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein in Bavaria. The clock towers and base are in Malachite and Mother of Pearl and furthered decorated with Lapis Lazuli, Black Onyx, B.C. Jade, Coral and Red Jasper accented with gold plated brass ornamentation. The Hooded Falcon
The Falcon
The falcon or hawk signifies someone who is hot or eager in the pursuit of an object much desired. It is frequently found in the coats of arms of nobility from the time when the falcon played an important social role in the sport of kings and nobles. It is found as a heraldic bearing as early as the reign of King Edward II of England. The falcon was also the badge of one of King Henry VIII’s wives, Anne Boleyn, and was later adopted by her daughter Queen Elizabeth I.
The falcon is frequently found ‘belled,’ with bells on one or both of its legs. It may also be ‘jessed and belled’ meaning that the jess, the leather thong that ties the bell to the leg, is shown with the ends flying loose; or it may be hooded, which is how falcons were carried on the wrist until flown. The falcon is indistinguishable, in heraldry, from the sparrow-hawk, goshawk, kite, or merlin, though they may be described that way in blazon. The falcon’s head is a common symbol on a crest; it can also be found, though, preying on something, which is termed trussing, rising or close.
Falconry
Falconry is a sport which involves the use of trained raptors (birds of prey) to hunt or pursue game for humans. There are two traditional terms used to describe a person involved in falconry: a falconer flies a falcon; an austringer flies a hawk (Accipiter and some buteonines and similar) or an eagle (Aquila or similar). In modern falconry the Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) and the Harris hawk are often used. The words “hawking” and “hawker” have become used so much to mean petty traveling traders, that the terms “falconer” and “falconry” now apply to all use of trained birds of prey to catch game.
Some views of falconry state that the art started in Mesopotamia, but some say that it started in the Far East. The earliest evidence comes from around the reign of Sargon II (722-705 BC). Falconry was probably introduced to Europe around AD 400, when the Huns and Alans invaded from the East. Frederick II of Hohenstaufen has been noted as one of the early European noblemen to take an interest in falconry. He is believed to have obtained firsthand knowledge of Arabic falconry during wars in the region (between June 1228–June 1229). He obtained a copy of Moamyn’s manual on falconry and had it translated into Latin by Theodore of Antioch. Frederick II himself made corrections to the translation in 1241 resulting in De Scientia Venandi per Aves.

Moscow Kremlin Fabergé Egg
Moscow Kremlin (Fabergé egg)
The Moscow Kremlin Egg (or the Uspenski Cathedral Egg) is a jeweled Easter egg made under the supervision of the Russian jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé in 1906, for the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II. Tsar Nicholas presented the egg to his wife, the Tsarina Alexandra Fyodorovna.

Craftsmanship
This is by far the largest of the eggs and was inspired by the architecture of the Cathedral of the Assumption (Uspenski) in Moscow. The reason for this was because this was once where all the Russian Tsars were crowned, including Nicholas.
The Cathedral dome (in white opalescent enamel) is removable, and the remarkably crafted interior of the church can be seen. Its carpets, tiny enameled icons and High Altar on an oval glass plate are made visible through four triple windows, surmounted by a gold cupola and flanked by two square, two circular stylized turrets, the former based on the Spassky Tower. The tower bears the coat-of-arms of the Russian Empire and Moscow, inset with ‘chiming clocks’. It stands on a crenelated gold base and octagonal white onyx plinth designed as a pyramid, and built of smaller pyramids. It is currently held in the Kremlin Armory Museum in Moscow.
Surprise
The surprise in this egg is music. The base of the egg contains a gold ‘music box’ that plays two cherubim chants, traditional Easter hymns can be played when a clockwork mechanism is wound up by a gold key. One of the hymns is the “Izhe Khveruviny”, a favorite hymn of Tsar Nicholas.
History of the egg
The egg commemorates the return to Moscow of the royal couple Nicholas and Alexandra in 1903. They earlier avoided the historical capital because during their coronation, hundreds of Moscovites were crushed to death. The egg itself was supposed to be presented in 1904 as engraved at the foot in white enamel on a round gold plate is the date. But the delivery was delayed because of the Russo-Japanese War. Then, in 1905 Nicholas’ favorite uncle and brother-in-law, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich was assassinated in the Kremlin. So instead the egg was presented in 1906.
Ashli Jewelers would like to introduce you to the world of Miniature Gemstone Castle Clocks! Both pieces were inspired by the architecture of the Moscow Kremlin Egg or the Uspenski Cathedral Egg made by Karl E. Faberge where the Czars of Russia were crowned in the 19th century as mentioned above.

Diamond and Blue Sapphire Brooch inspired by the Portuguese Man of War
Portuguese Man-of-War (Physalia physalis)
Although a member of the phylum Cnidaria, the Portuguese man-of-war is not a “true” jellyfish. These animals consist of a complex colony of individual members, including a float, modified feeding polyps and reproductive medusae. Physalia typically inhabit the warm waters of the tropics, sub-tropics and Gulf Stream. Propelled by wind and ocean currents, they sometimes drift into nearshore waters of South Carolina. Though they infrequently visit our coast, swimmers should learn to identify these highly venomous creatures. The gas-filled float of the man-of-war is purple-blue and can reach lengths of 12 inches. Under thefloat, tentacles equipped with thousands of nematocysts hang from the feeding polyps extending up to 65 feet.
The man-of-war can inflict extremely painful stings. Symptoms include severe shooting pain described as a shocklike sensation, and intense joint and muscle pain. Pain may be accompanied by headaches, shock, collapse, faintness, hysteria, chills, fever, nausea and vomiting. Initial contact with Physalia may result in only a small number of stings. However, efforts to escape from the tentacles may further discharge nematocysts and intensify stings. Care should be taken when removing the adhering tentacles. Severe stings can occur even when the animal is beached or dead.
Ashli presents this diamond and blue sapphire brooch inspired by nature’s Portuguese man-of-war and designed specifically for a treasured friend to comfort her after being stung! The brooch features Baguette sapphires, carat total weight 16.88; cabochon moonstones, carat total weight 31.07; 2.93 carats of VVS, E- G round brilliant diamonds set in 18k white and yellow gold.
